How Extended DISC® Works

Respondents complete an online questionnaire that takes about 10 minutes. The questionnaires are available in English ( India) , Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, and Kannada languages (the best way to get a valid assessments is to allow participants respond in their native language).The results are emailed within seconds. They can be sent to the respondent, facilitator, administrator or combination of recipients.

Extended DISC measures emotions

Extended DISC measures the unconscious behavior and compares it with the conscious adjusted behavioral style, allowing the measurement of emotions. It goes way beyond regular DISC in this regard. We can then look at the emotions being communicated by the respondent at the time of completion of the questionnaire, such as stress levels, uncertainty of his/her role, insecurity, frustration, pressure to change etc. It also enables the report to define the influence of the present environment on the respondent’s motivation as far as certain needs are concerned. This is vital information both for the individual and the organization.

More behavioral styles than in any other instrument

Extended DISC assumes that an individual has reaction modes for all behavior styles, of which he or she prefers some more than others. Recognizing some 160 different styles, Extended DISC allows an individual to be more flexible and dynamic (adapting) in his or her behavior. Other DISC based programs assume an individual is either a feeling or thinking type, recognizing only four styles. Even Myers-Briggs, one of the best known assessment systems around, recognizes only 16 different styles.

Extended DISC is difficult to cheat

Extended DISC is extremely difficult to cheat. DISC programs can (and often are) answered by the respondent in the way they believe their potential employer would like them to answer. This is because in the other DISC programs, the emphasis is on the conscious adjusted behavioral style. We know when someone has tried to beat the system. The report will be either invalid, show mirror profiles, show a tight Profile II or show an over-shift in Profiles. There is no way of knowing when a simple DISC report is inaccurate.

More stable results than with any other instrument

Profile II illustrates a person’s natural response to an external stimulus. It is the behavioral style that takes the least energy and effort, requires the least amount of concentration and is usually the most pleasant to the individual. It is possible to define action and thinking models to a person’s natural behavioral style by using Profile II. Any significant and large changes in it usually mean significant events and changes in the immediate environment of the individual. These are forcing him or her to seek new ways to cope.

Measures the individual both on unconscious AND conscious levels

Profile I illustrates how the person feels they want/need to adjust their behavior to cope with the requirements of the present environment. Profile I demonstrates the individual’s conscious understanding of oneself and one’s own behavior in the present situation (conscious self image).

Profile II illustrates a person’s natural response to an external stimulus.

It is a behavioral style that takes the least energy and effort, requires the least amount of concentration, and is usually the most pleasant to the individual. It illustrates the reaction mode that the person uses to naturally react and is most frequently exhibited outwardly in one’s behavior.

By comparing these two profiles we can tell whether a person has tried to answer the questions the way they believe the interviewer wants them to appear, we can tell whether there is a key feeling of uncertainty or lack of clarity, whether the person feels insecure or whether a person is frustrated. We can even interpret a key feeling of helplessness and again whether a person is under pressure. We can tell whether a person feels the need to adjust, the amount they feel the need to adjust, and whether that adjustment is likely to lead to stress in the long haul.

Our competition, at best, can create around 200 different texts. The style and format is concise and contains easy to understand graphic illustrations. A good understanding of the main behavioral styles is essential in using Extended DISC® assessments. Once the user has gained this understanding, it is very easy to apply this knowledge to numerous applications. Extended DISC® History

The Extended DISC® System is based on a psychological theory developed in the 1920′s. Carl G. Jung created the foundations for the theory in his book The Psychological Types (Die Psychologische Typen). His ideas were based on defining two behavioural axes; sensation- intuition and thinking - feeling, and the four main behavioural traits that they composed. The work of Jung was further developed by William Moulton-Marston who defined a four dimensional behavioural map.

As a result, the four-quadrant thinking of human behaviour was developed. It is still popular and is used in many management, sales and leadership training techniques. A few variations of the theory exist that use, for example, eight or sixteen categories of behavioural styles. The over-simplification of behaviour and its classifications have proven to be a weakness in these systems.

The original DISC reference framework was developed at the end of the 1940′s and the beginning of the 1950′s to eliminate these problems. It uses regression analysis to separate the combined four basic behavioural styles from each other and makes them into independent and even interdependent behavioural styles. This also makes it possible to have a framework of millions of human reaction modes that can be transformed by using different techniques, into a smaller, more usable quantity.

The DISC profile has proven to be a very clear way of describing and analysing an individual’s natural reaction mode to the stimuli in the environment. Recognizing some 160 different behavioural styles, The Extended DISC® System allows an individual to be more flexible and dynamic (adapting) in his or her behaviour.

Extended DISC® Theory does not classify people into good or bad. Nor does it limit a person’s possibilities to develop in any other direction or work environment. Extended DISC® Theory describes the person’s natural reaction mode or behavioural style in different situations. It gives the person a better ability to understand one’s own and others’ behaviour, to adjust one’s own behaviour to better suit the situation, to avoid unnecessary problems in communication and to point one’s life into the direction where he or she better succeeds and enjoys it the most.

About Extended DISC®

Extended DISC was founded in 1994 by Jukka Sappinen, an MBA from the Helsinki School of Economics who spent his early professional years consulting clients in the use of psychological tools. A profound understanding of the gap between existing tools and corporate needs enabled Jukka to develop what his clients were looking for: an instrument that combines a range of valuable analyses, forming a simple, unified system that can be used to generate understandable, integrated information on an individual, team, or entire organization.

The early years of the company, 1994-1997, were spent honing the system in Finland with the cooperation of key clients and experts in psychology, statistics, HR, consulting, and IT. In 1997, the company’s first international franchise was set up in the USA, still a major market.

The company has always been a technology leader in the industry. It was the first one to introduce Windows based software system (compared to the old dos systems). Similarly, it was the first to introduce an online solution to enable completion of the questionnaires online in 1999.

One of the top three companies in the field today, Extended DISC International has spread to over 50 countries, with an annual growth rate of 20-50%. The Extended DISC® System has been translated into 55 languages and was used by over a million people in 2009.
